Australian Landscape Conference
The Camberwell Centre, Camberwell VIC Australia 8 - 9 September
2007
This is the seventh international landscape and garden design
conference to be held in Melbourne—the largest of its kind
in the southern hemisphere. The first, initiated by Mr Tony Mugg
in 1989, attracted over 1,000 delegates. The 2005 conference was
also a great success with some brilliant speakers and a total
of 631 delegates. This year, following extensive research, we
are delighted to present a total of eleven papers by overseas
speakers and three by Australians. On the basis of these outstanding
speakers, we have no doubt that this conference will also prove
an exhilarating experience.
Given current dry weather patterns and the consequent challenges
they present, it was almost inevitable that our conference theme
be New Gardens for a Dry Continent. Many of our speakers will
address these issues, using professional experience from quite
different cultures such as Spain, France and California. We Australians
have been slow to appreciate the possibilities for so-called ‘drought-tolerant’
and ‘Mediterranean-style’ gardens but we are left
with few choices—the winds of change are well and truly
upon us.

New Zealand Landscape & Garden Design Conference
Waipuna Hotel and Conference Centre, Auckland New Zealand 1 -
2 September 2007
This is the second international conference to be convened in
New Zealand following the successful conference held in Auckland
in 2005. The format is similar to those conferences held in Melbourne
every few years since the first in 1989. This year, following
extensive research, we are delighted to present a total of twelve
papers by overseas speakers and two by New Zealanders. We recognise
that the success of these conferences is primarily due to the
outstanding overseas speakers and we have no doubt that this conference
will live up to the exhilaration of the 2005 experience.
This year’s theme is Garden Design for a Changing Climate—a
theme which acknowledges the rapid pace of change in landscape
and garden design throughout the world. Gardens today often reflect
changing lifestyles, global warming and a need for low maintenance
horticulture. Can these challenges be met, and can gardens still
be beautiful, comfortable and designed to uplift the senses and
inspire?
